I frequently use files saved from MS Excel as XML but when I try to open one of
these files in OO Spreadsheet it hangs the application.

CPU goes up to 100% and stays there until I do a forced quit.

This is still confirmed with OpenOffice 2.3.0-1ubuntu5. Why is nothing happening?

I am sorry about this issue, Thomas. 

Frankly speaking, nothing is happening as nobody of the community has
volunteered to fix this issue.

The workload of our Sun team here in Hamburg has been moved to different
projects as we have to focus on the most important tasks.

I hope someone of the community is willing to help you.

Re-confirmed with openoffice.org version 2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3.
