I would change the thousand separator from «.» to « » (spazio breve, U+200A), so
we can figure out the difference between the decimal dot in untranslated strings
and the thousand separator in translated ones.
This discussion began in the KDE translation list and was forwarded to the
GNOME/GNU and openOffice translators, to achieve a consistent translation
beteween OSS projects.

I don't see it feasible for the time being. It would require changing the locale
data for Italian but there is no compelling reason for it, since "." is still
standard and used by competitors, and by far the most common separator in common
usage.
