Description gnubee40 2009-12-30 01:24:05 UTC
I edited a table extensively, merging cells in columns and changing the
columnwidth several times. After I had merged two areas in some of the columns I
realized that I no longer could format columns with more than one merged area.
When I select one of these columns
- all format buttons or options in formatting toolbars, main menu and context
menu get greyed out
- the columns appears to be selected, but in the "Tables" menu and the context
menu the only option available is "Select"
- After using the "Select" option in either context or main menu the format
options become available again
- Selecting and formatting a group of columns containing "problem columns" is
totally impossible.

Splitting back the merged areas back into separate cells leaving no more than 1
merged area pr column reverts the problem.

Buggy Table
Comment 3 Rainer Bielefeld 2009-12-30 07:59:07 UTC
NOT reproducible with "tablebug.odt" and "Ooo 3.2.0 RC1 WIN XP DE-multilingual
version German UI activated [OOo320m8 (Build 9472)]"! I stepped the cursor
though all cells, additionally I selected 'A3:H4', 'A5:H5', 'C1:F6', complete
table, but I never saw unexpected greyed out menu items ore toolbar icons.

WFM, because reporter's version is outdated.

Pls. feel free to reopen the issue if you find out that the problem still exists
in a current stable version (3.1.1 or later).
Before you file further issues or post again here, please read our guidelines on
<http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html> and
<http://www.openoffice.org/bugs/bug_writing_guidelines.html>, then
contribute a clear step by step instruction containing all relevant information
and observations (error messages ...), _every_key_press_and_every_mouse_click_
how to reproduce the problem, and explain why you believe that your results are
unexpected.
That means (for example):
do not write something like „I am not able to ...“, but
„6. left mouse click on …
     expected: …, color of … changes, …
actual: no …., color remains white, no …

Screenshots might help to explain the problem.

I will close the document within 10 days if we don't get required further
information.

I run OOO 300m15 Build 9379 on Ubuntu 9.04.
My steps to produce the error:

Mouse pointer over "problem" column(s)until it turns to downwards arrow ->
leftclick. This seems to select the column(s), but my format options get greyed
out.
There are no problems in formatting separate cells in these columns. But
selecting a range and namely adjutsting columnswidth is not possible.

Possibly this error has been fixed in later versions. Haven't upgraded the
distro yet...

Reproducible with "Ooo 3.2.0 RC1 WIN XP DE-multilingual version German UI
activated [OOo320m8 (Build 9472)]"!

Steps to reproduce:
0. open "tablebug.odt", select/check menu 'View -> Toolbars -> Table' if
   necessary
1. move mouse pointer short above top border
you see little black arrow downwards) to select a column
2. select column 'C' by mouseclick
   Expected: selected column highlighted,
all symbls in Tab toolbar and all items in Tab-Menu active
   Actual: als expected
3. Now redo from 1 for column "E" ("These cannot ...)
   Expected: selected column highlighted,
all symbls in Tab toolbar and all items in Tab-Menu active
   Actual: Most functions greyed out
4. Now click somewhere outside the table, then redo from 1. for Column 'E',
but do not select column by muse click, but by click into cell with "These"
and then move mouse pointer down with dragged mouse button, release button
   in cell most bottom.
Expected: all greyed out as in 3.
Actual: all Functions active (and if you try, they will really work)

That's unintuitive.

@gnubee40:
Can you confirm the difference between steps 3. / 4. ?

Confirmed!

Step 3: Error - most functions greyed out
Step 4: All works like expected.
Selecting columns using shift+arrow keys also works fine.

MRU->OS: see attached table. When selecting column E or F via "column selection
cursor", all editing/formatting options are disabled.
Selecting via dragging from top to bottom of the column will workaround the problem.

Reset assigne to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
