Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 115222
Footer formating in PPT-files
Last modified: 2013-04-25 00:55:58 UTC
The formating of the footer in a PPT is not preserved when opening the file with Impress. Openoffice Impress always opens the footer in standard-size and alignement without preserving what has been specified either in Openoffice or in Powerpoint itself. No problem with this if it is a OTP or ODP file. I've tested and reproduced the problem as well with Ubuntu 10.10 as under Windows XP (using Openoffice 3.2.0). Simon
Please attach a test document. Thanks.

Just uploaded the presentation in OPD format and in PPT format. The PPT does not preserve the formating of the footer.
Could you please attach screenshot of how it should look in ppt and how it looks in your OO? Thanks.

Opening the ppt file in Office 2007 it looks exactly as in your "Footer_as_it_looks_if_PPT_Format.png" screenshot. Maybe this is an issue of missing fonts?
Well, my goal was to make it look the same whether I save it in PPT or in ODP. Actually, the "Footer_as_it_looks_if_PPT_Format.png" shows as it should *not* look like. And it's certainly not linked to fonts. I've tested it also on Windows.
Using OOO 3.2.1 in Windows7 I was able to reproduce the bug. The replication steps are, 1. Create a new Powerpoint presentation. 2. Add footer to the slide, with new footer text (e.g.” Footer” in footer text tab in the dialog box). 3. Realign the footer by clicking on the footer and dragging it when a four headed arrow appears on top of the footer. Drag it to the bottom left corner. 4. Save the Powerpoint presentation with .ppt extention. 5. Now open the saved Powerpoint presentation with OpenOffice Impress. 6. You will find the footer to be realigned to another format.
Version OOo-dev-3.4.0 DEV300m99 (Build:9570) I am building on rajagopalsow's additional comments. I was not able to duplicate the results running MS PowerPoint 2003on WinXP SP3. 1. Create a new Powerpoint presentation. 2. Add footer to the slide, with new footer text (e.g.” Footer” in footer text tab in the dialog box). EDIT - bahughes: You need to go to View > Header and Footer to add Footer text. EDIT: bahughes - 19/02/2011 ********************************************* Step 3 cannot be accomplished without going into the Slide Master View by navigating through View > Master > Slide Master ************************************************************************* 3. 6. OpenOffice Impress maintained the Master Slide formatting from Powerpoint and the Impress slide displays the footer on the lower left just as on Powerpoint.
Version OOo-dev-3.4.0 DEV300m99 (Build:9570) I made an error. I was thinking that this was an issue with maintaining the position of the footer from .ppt to .odp. On further testing I was able to get similar results to Simon's. I adjusted the font size of the footer to Arial 8 in the Powerpoint Master Slide view. 1. Saved the file as a .ppt. 2. Opened the file in Impress. 3. Noted that it opened as Read Only and the footer font was displayed at the default Impress font size (18pt). 4. I tried to change the footer font size in the read only version but the options were disabled. 5. I saved the file as an ODF Presentation (.odp) 6. I was then able to change the footer font size by right clicking the footer in the Master Slide view and selecting Size.
Sorry, still not reproducible here with PPT2007 and Openoffice 3.2.1 on Win XP. Reassigned. @sj: any idea what this might be?
I am able to reproduce the issue in Open Office 3.2.0, 3.3.0 and Dev 3.4.0 DEV300m106 (Build: 9582). This issue becomes obvious when comparing the Power Point and Open Office side by side in view slideshow mode. See the attached word document with screenshots. In Figure 1, .ppt file is opened using Impress 3.2.0. In Figure 2, same .ppt file is opened using Microsoft Office Power Point 2000. Looking closely, Figure 1, Open Office footer is much larger than in Microsoft Power Point in Figure 2. The page number is also shifted to the left comparing to Power Point. It appears that Impress is using default standard font size/font format. That’s what Simon147 was talking about. Step to reproduce: 1. Create a blank Power Point slide using default settings. 2. Add footer via View Menu/Header and footer. 3. Type in the word “Footer” in footer section and then click “Apply” 4. Save as FooterTest.ppt file. 5. Press F5 or Slide Show menu/View show to see the slide in full screen. Take a screenshot. 6. Now, open same FooterTest.ppt using Impress 3.2.0 or 3.3.0 or dev 3.4. 7. Press F5 to see the slide in full screen. Take a screenshot. 8. Finally, compare two screenshots My PC configuration: System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50 GHz 2.49 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM Follow-up test: I do not have the latest Microsoft Power Point, which allows user to customize footer font size, font style and position of the footer. In my follow-up test, I’ll use the latest PowerPoint, change the font size (bigger and smaller) and move it to the left. Then, compare PowerPoint and Impress side by side. Customer Impact: This bug is not a showstopper, but it is good to fix especially for users who use footer. Open Office is competing with dominant player like Microsoft. If their footer is working, this product should too.

Just tested with Openoffice 3.4.1 (tested on Windows XP) and the bug is still very much there (by the way also in Libreoffice 3.5.4.2). Steps to reproduce are the same as given above.
Marking as confirmed per Simon's test on AOO 3.4.1 Thanks, Simon! -Rob
AOO 4.0 snapshot build (AOO400m1(Build:9700) - Rev. 1468069) replicates the bug. I am testing it on Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) SP1.
AOO 4.0 nightly build (AOO400m1(Build:9700) - Rev. 1471097 Rev.1470611) replicates the bug. I am testing it on Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) SP1. Don't know why two revision numbers are shown in Help -> About OpenOffice
