I was able to reproduce this bug on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with OO version4.0.1. I followed the steps from the description 1, and when trying to select 2 or more image files all of my OO windows close. Upon crash I was prompted with the following message, "Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice crashed. All the files you were working on wil now be saved. The next time OpenOffice is launched, your files will be recovered automatically.". The two images I tried to open were both .png files.
I tried to recreate the issue based on the details provided in the initial report. The steps provided in the initial report are helpful. I have used Window 7 operating system and AOO 4.0.1. Writer . Exactly followed the steps written in the intial report and used only 2 JPEG files. Actual result : -------------- I have received a msg "Open Office 4.0.1 stopped working". When I tried to close the program I am unable to close Open Office.I tried to close the Open office thru the task manager and still I was unable to do so. I think the only option left is need to reboot the computer.I think this is a critcal issue.
Additional Note: For the above scenario I have mentioned I was able to close the program after the program crashed in Open office 3.0.

Which insert do you use exactly? When I use insert/picture from file I can only select a single file in the appearing dialog, so I cannot reproduce this.
(In reply to Armin Le Grand from comment #6) > Which insert do you use exactly? Ctrl+click to select two pictures in the Insert dialog and Insert.
Hi Edwin, thanks, but still cannot find a 'Insert icon in Navigator window' in Writer. When I open the navigator Window (menu:View/navigator or F5) or use the navigator in the Sidebar (Compass symbol) there is no insert icon or I do not know how to get it visible. Please could you give a step-by-step description or make a snapshot of the icon you talk about or where it is located? Thanks in advance!

Created attachment 83257 [details] Screenshot of Navigator in Writer Hi Edwin, I attach a screenshot how my navigator looks. It's the one in Writer on Win7 when I use in the menu view/navigator or press F5. Same in the Sidebar. Thus, I have no insert button. Maybe you use some special Writer mode (Web, HTML or whatever...?)
Hi Edwin, sorry, I found it. It is a special Navigator for Writer MasterDocument. I am not sure if that button is even intended for inserting pictures. I can now reproduce the crash.
Quick check: All possibilities to insert pics in normal writer do allow selection of only one pic; only D&D allows to add multiple pics at once, and it works as intended (even with MasterDocument)
AFAIK it is not intended for inserting pictures, only documents (there is a request for spreadsheets also). But the Insert dialog is not filtered accordingly...
It seems to crash with any non-text-doc type when selecting more han one file; with a single file it seems to be avoided/being checked somewhere
Confirmed with version 4.1.13 Note: No crash if image files are inserted into the master document by dragging and dropping them on the master view of the Navigator. Their names will be marked in red (the tip read "File not found file:/// ...").
