Impress preview issue

Open the document in Openoffice.org Impress(version 3.3). Its preview is
totally different from MS power point preview.

It seems that there is some issue with reading/importing.

Note: Attached document open correctly with Openoffice 3.1 relase and its export to PDF is also working fine.

REPLICATED in OOo-dev 3.4.0 (DEV300m106) using attachment (Facebook.ppt) provided.

STEPS and FINDINGS:
Please refer to replication.png which contains 4 screenshots.

1. Open the file in Impress.
>> Slides were displayed as black. See sample in 1st screenshot.

2. Try resizing the slide pane.
>> Certain sizes causes the thumbnails to display only black. See 2nd screenshot.

3. Close and restart Impress to be prompted by the Presentation Wizard.
Select "Open existing presentation" and select the file.
>> In the Preview, it is displayed as black. See 3rd screenshot.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
- 4th screenshot is how the first slide looks like in MS PowerPoint.
- Envt details: OS Windows 7 Home Edition. OOo version DEV300m106. MS PowerPoint version 2010.

FOLLOW-UP TESTS:
(1) Opened file and saved it in PowerPoint. In Impress, above problems with slides, thumbnails and preview were NOT replicated.

(2) Opened file and saved it as PPTX in PowerPoint. In Impress, above problems with slides and thumbnails were NOT replicated. BUT a different alert was encountered during Preview: "Error loading the template : Incorrect format. The file cannot be used as template."

(3) Opened file in Impress and saved a copy. Using PowerPoint to open the copy, the backgrounds were not preserved. In the slide and thumbnails, there's a placeholder indicating "This image cannot currently be displayed.

(4) Opened file in Impress. From the Tasks pane, Master Pages group, I applied another template, and then reapplied the template used in the presentation. I saved the changes. After these steps, the above problems with slides, thumbnails and preview were NOT replicated.

Bug 117973
Was able to recreate the bug with the given file on Mac running ooo 3.4 dev
On a late 2008 Mac book pro 2.4 GHz Intel core 2
Duo 2GB ram with the given file using the steps described in the previous comment.
Differences in observations
The slide bar was missing with the open file(the Mac multi touch track pad was used to change the zoom)
Different thumbnail slides were blank than the pervious updater showed in the screen shots.
When scrolling a lower bound would make the editable window turn black. At a certain level below that the blank screen will turn
At some upper bounds of zooming the color of background would change drastically such as from red to blue and brown
The 4th provided screenshot was identical to what I saw when opening the file in Ms PowerPoint Mac 2008.

Notes
This is most likely a failure in importing a file from ms pp as applying the background in master slide will fix the error as reproduced in the follow-up test 4.
on a first impression basis importing an old PowerPoint slide would severely detract from the values possibly convincing an ordinary user to not use this software.

Investigated bug with following:
- Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601
- OpenOffice.org 3.4.0 A00340m1 (Build: 9590) - Rev. 1327774
- Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2007 SP3 MSO
- Default country and language: Netherlands and Dutch

Replicated the finding using attachment "Impress preview issue" (Facebook.ppt)

Steps and findings:
1. A. Selected above link to attachment and chose Impress to open it
   R. The slides were displayed as black both in the Slides pane and in the edit
pane (Normal tab). Red underlining suggests that spell checking noted text
      to underline.
The line and filling toolbaar all buttons are faded and Line style, Line
width, Line color and Area style filling are empty.
Only line style has selectable pull down menu.

2. A. Selected Outline tab
   R. All the slides texts are shown. Text of the first slide is selected.

3. A. Selected Notes tab
   R. All 21 slides appear as black with spell check underlining

4. A. Selected Handout tab
   R. Empty handout pages

5. A. Selected Slide Sorter tab
   R. All slides shown as black.

Follow up tests:

1. A. Opened another instance of Impress. Selected Open existing presentation
in Presentation Wizzard radio button. Facebook.ppt (downloaded with
      FireFox 12.0) and clicked Open.
   R. Bug was replicated

2. A. Opened another instance of Impress. Selected Open existing presentation
in Presentation Wizzard radio button. Facebook.ppt (downloaded with
Internet Explorer 9) and clicked Open.
   R. Bug was replicated.

3. A. Downloaded the file and immediately opened it with Powerpoint. Then
stored it on local drive. Opened it with Impress.
   R. File opened without visible problems. Was readable and looked
      similar to the Powerpoint version.

reproduce in aoo_trunk 1376366 on XP
Comment 7 Matthias Seidel 2023-03-27 19:10:03 UTC
The PPT opens fine in AOO 4.1.14.

Issue occurred until version 3.4.1 and was probably fixed with AOO 4.0.0.

Thank you Czesław for checking!
