Description r.williams143 2014-10-14 18:42:29 UTC
When I attempt to re-open an Impress document that was created in an earlier version of Open Office as the document is being opened it gets about 50% along the 'bar' and then the document crashes and displays a message to say that 'Open Office has encountered a problem and needs to close' ... but there is no explanation of the problem.

This also happens on other installations on computers with W7/32, W7/64 and W8.1/64 OS all of which are using AOO 4.1.1

I did not have this issue with earlier editions [4.0.0 and before] of AOO which I have been using since version 3.0.0

I’m unable to replicate this problem, could you attach the problem file that you were trying to open? Was the file an .odp file? Does this happen for 1 file in particular or can you replicate it with various files created in an older version of Impress? Do you remember what version of Impress the problem file(s) were created in? When the error message is displayed is there an option to download / view details, if so could you provide the error report? Could you check to see if the event viewer has an application event log after the failure (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/open-event-viewer#1TC=windows-7 if you’re unsure how to locate the event viewer) and attach the information if they do.
Below are the steps I took to try and replicate, am I doing anything different?
My PC Config:
•	Win 8.1 64-bit
•	AMD
•	8 GB RAM
Steps taken:
1.	Installed OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 AOO341m1(Build:9593) – Rev. 1372282 from the main download site (http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html)
2.	Created new basic presentation with title slide, slide with bulleted list and a slide with a png see Created in 3-4-1.odp
3.	Installed Open Office 4.1.1 and selected the option to “Remove all older product versions”
4.	Navigated to saved file and double clicked to open – file open as expected
5.	Closed Impress and Re-opened a blank presentation and then opened file using file>open – file opened as expected

I was not able to repro this crash. Tried by creating document in AOO 3.0.0 and then successively opening it in the next versions of AOO up to 4.1.1. Also I tried Windows 7 as problem was reported for this OS version as well.

Config
•	Win 7 64-bit
•	Intel
•	6 GB RAM
•	JDK 1.8.0_31

Steps taken

1. Installed AOO 3.0.0m9 (Build: 9358) from official download site
2. Created presentation from template with AOO Impress Presentation Wizard and adding sound, video and picture into it. See attachment PresentationWithInsertedAssets_Created In_AOO3-0-0.odp
3. Opened this presentation in AOO 3.0.0m9 (Build:9358) again 3 times by dbl-clicking on odp file in Windows File Explorer
4. Installed AOO 3.4.1m1(Build:9593) with removing previous AOO version
5. Opened saved presentation 3 times by dbl-clicking on odp file in Windows File Explorer
6. Got no crash
7. Installed AOO4.0.0m3(Build:9702) - Rev.1503704 with removing previous AOO version
8. Opened saved presentation 3 times by dbl-clicking on odp file in Windows File Explorer
9. Got no crash
10. Installed AOO4.1.0m18(Build:9764) - Rev.1589052 with removing previous AOO version
11. Opened saved presentation 3 times by dbl-clicking on odp file in Windows File Explorer
12. Got no crash
13. Installed AOO4.1.1m6(Build:9775) - Rev.1617669 with removing previous AOO version
14. Opened saved presentation 3 times by dbl-clicking on odp file in Windows File Explorer
15. Got no crash

In order to reproduce this issue it is critical to get and use this specific “crashable” file and then address questions asked by Luke Barfield.
