Description bbacle 2016-03-17 12:34:46 UTC
I have some Powerpoint presentations that I have created and wanted to use your presentation software, but when I open them up and go to slide show, they are NOT automated. I have to click or press the down arrow key to get them to move forward, even though they were created as automatic in Powerpoint.
And they do not look nearly as good as in Powerpoint.
Is there something that I am missing here?
Thanks.

To run PPS, the best way is to use MS-Powerpoint viewer.

It is not clear that the user is using .pps. It could be .ppt. In that case this is a related defect (or built-in limitation) and we need further feedback to know which.

The user describes opening PowerPoint presentations in OpenOffice and *then* going to the slide show only to see that the slide show does not present automatically.

The slides were created with automatic/timed transitions.

We need more information.

 1. What version of PowerPoint was used to create the slides?

 2. What format was the presentation saved in (.ppt, .pptx, ...)?

 2. Can the user provide a small (2-3 slide) version with any proprietary information altered so that we can test with the exact kind of presentation?

TO THE REPORTER

 1. When your slide deck is opened in Apache OpenOffice Impress (version 4.1.x), the Slide Show menu has two items related to transitions and automation. Check the Slide Show > Slide Show Settings ... and the Slice Show > Slide Transition ... settings of your PowerPoint deck to see if these reflect any of your settings in PowerPoint. If you don't see what you expect, it is a limitation of the OpenOffice Impress import filter for PowerPoint files.

 2. Please note that OpenOffice Impress is not offered as an interoperable work-alike substitute for PowerPoint. Although it is often useful, there is no guarantee of complete feature and presentation fidelity.

Thank you for the link to Issue 52755.

I reviewed that issue and conclude that this issue is not a duplicate.

 1. Issue 52755 is about PPS[X] files opening in Presentation Mode automatically, possibly under a configuration option of OpenOffice.

 2. This issue (126875) is not about how Presentation Mode is entered. It is about whether or not the automation, including automatic slide advance, specified in a PowerPoint file are preserved in OpenOffice Impress. This involves different facts.

We need to determine whether or not Impress and the PowerPoint import are designed to do that or not. If not, this becomes a feature request. If so, we need to understand why it is not happening in the reporter's case.

I am re-opening this issue with a requirement for confirmation, including more details from this or other reporters.

I rechecked my powerpoint as orcmid suggested to see if the slide transitions were as they were in powerpoint...they were, but it still does not automate the slide show.
I realize that I could use Powerpoint Viewer, but this would only work on a single monitor, not on a projector, which is where I want to use this.
Apparently, this is a limitation of OpenOffice and apparently will not work for my needs.
Therefore I am uninstalling it, since it is useless to me.
Thank you for your comments and help.

bbacle,
Can you try to save-as your file to ODF Presentation (.odp) and check the slide transitions deck tab settings.

Set them as desired for all slides and try the slide show again.

Thanks,
Carl

Comment #4 from the author seems to be confirm that this issue is duplicate, no?

There are two different cases. One is whether Presentation Mode starts automatically. The other is whether the Automation of the Presentation (not its starting) in PPT is properly carried out in Impress.

They may have both been observed, but the reporter of Issue 57295 is not clear whether both cases are meant.

Since the reporter of this issue has not provided an attachment that can be confirmed with, we may have to leave this open as unconfirmed for now, in case anyone else has a confirming example.

I confirmed the transition setting is not set when opening a MS Powerpoint pptx file in AOO 4.1.2. A ppt worked normally.
