Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 14770
non-breaking space and hyphen are undiscoverable
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
There is currently no way to discover that one can insert a non-breaking space or non-breaking hyphen. The only way to learn about these features is to look for them explicitly in Help. (So, you have to know that the feature exists beforehand.) Many people discover features by happening upon them in the menus. Furthermore, people expect to find features they know about to be accessible through the menus. Therefore, i think that there should be a way to insert non-breaking spaces and hyphens in some way under the Insert menu. WordPerfect does this (though i don´t remember exactly where.) Maybe there should be a submenu labelled something like ¨Special formatting characters¨.
Please try using the latest OOo 1.1 Rc4, Your version already old enough, and many bug fixes since your version and 1.1 RC4. If the problem still happend in 1.1 RC4 please report back I think it is feature, not defect
I will not have the ability to download RC4 for another week yet, but this is almost certainly not fixed. (I have been using the RCs for quite a while, but i'm not sure if i have actually checked one of them for this bug. I am away on a trip and cannot currently use OOo at all.) It is very easy for anyone to verify whether this issue has been addressed. Simply try to access non-breaking space and non-breaking hyphen using the drop-down menus. If you can't, then the bug has not been addressed. Hiding a useful feature from the user cannot be considered a feature, as you suggest. And if it were a feature, why are you suggesting that it has already been fixed? (We fix bugs, not features.)
changed type from "Defect" to "Enhancement" @bulbul: just type "non-breaking" in the textfield of the Index-tab of the Writer help and you'll get list items like "non-breaking dash", "non-breaking hyphens" and "non-breaking spaces" @bh: Maybe this something for a "Tip of the Day" which existed in SO5.2 Maybe this could be resurged again?

reassigning to requirements
confirming as a new enhancement issue.
There is currently an omission in the Help file for this in Open Office 2.0 final. The Help file lists it under Ctrl + Shift+ Minus sign
Ctrl+Hyphen(-) Custom hyphens; hyphenation set by you. Ctrl+Shift+minus sign (-) Non-breaking dash (is not used for hyphenation)
It should also be listed as: Ctrl + Shift + hyphen (-) Non-breaking dash (is not used for hyphenation) There is also a difference in the behaviour with Numlock Off or On.
FME: Has been added to Insert -> Formatting Mark meanwhile. I'll close this issue.
