Description reinerg61 2004-07-07 03:03:37 UTC
The current label feature only supports single sided labels. I sometimes need
to print out flash cards from a database (example: foreign word on one side,
translation on the other). The ability to print out double sided labels (AKA
flashcards) would be extremely popular.

For flashcards I'd use a regular writer document with pagesize set to the size
of the flashcard.
Odd pages are front, even pages are the back. If you don't own a duplex-printer
you can first print the fronts by choosing File|Print->Options, check [x] left
pages and uncheck [ ] right pages. Reinsert the cards into the printer and
choose [ ] left pages [x] right pages.

This seems to be more straightforward for creating flashcards....

I'm not sure how changing the page size helps. How does my database work with
this method? I need to print 10 properly spaced cards per sheet.

I have a database with ~5000 entries. Each entry has a column for the front of
the card and 2 columns for the back of the card (Front = foreign_word, Back =
pronunciation & meaning). I want to use pre-perforated business card paper (10
cards/sheet, 2 columns of 5 cards ($US 7 per 100 sheets; creates 1000 cards).
Card 1 front side is in the upper LEFT hand corner. When the paper is flipped
over, card 1 back side is in the upper RIGHT hand corner. A double sided label
could automatically do the proper printing adjustments.

I thought you would like to print actual flash-cards, (e.g. already "cut
out"-ones). Most printers don't have a problem with small paper-formats.. but my
suggestion won't help if one wants to print multiple cards per sheet...

Regarding datbase-connectivity: This is not a problem. You could use the
mail-merge feature (Just create a two-page document with the appropriate
"question" database-fileds on the first page and the "answer" fields on the
second page. Select the records you want to print and run the mail merge (for
more details regarding the mail merge, please see the online help)

You could of course use the mail-merge approach for printing on your
10-per-sheet-cards, but you will have to take care of the placement of the
answers yourself (question on the left -> answer has to be put onto the right
and v.v.)
And you have to do the printing with two documents (one for the answers, one for
the questions since I don't know how to properly switch to the next record in
this case.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
