Description aladincz 2005-01-04 10:12:51 UTC
Hello,
I found that in no 1.1 version is posible to import text file with tabed text into spredsheet. It always
open it as text documnet. That is bad. And when I copy data from text doc to table doc it change
column format for value say 5.0 to date and result is may 1st 2005. I ahve to made three steps to get
desirable result while simple import into table as Excel does would made the trick.
Thanks a lot. I use MAc OS X but it works same on Windows.

Try this: In file-open dialog first choose your file, so that the filename is
entered in the field "filename". Second - really in that order! - scroll down in
the filetype-field to the section, where the spreadsheets are, an choose "Text
CSV (*.csv,*.txt)". You will get an import dialog. In this import dialog in
section "seperator options" mark "tabulator". You can see a preview in the
dialog. If a column has the wrong type, click on the header of that column and
choose the correct one.
If you are inside a spreadsheet you get the file-open dialog via Insert ->
sheet... -> from file -> Browse.

Thanks for help. And sorry for reopening.
Choosing text format helps for first issue. But I would anyway suggest AppleWorks way of document
handling. You have to first choose document type and then you are offered with file formats that fits.
You can never counterchange right type that way. in Current way there is so many file formats to go
througt...
Other way could be ask user what to do with file when droped on App icon and when file can be
proceded in diferent ways.

BTW, I'm getting usualy nasty file from some automatic generated system that is text file but with .xls
extension. Realy stupid.

Second issue is with importing value like "5.0" that I was reporting eather.
In import filter, that is excelent btw, when you import value in format say 5.0 it looks in import preview
normaly but in imported seet it is changed to date and result is May 1st 2005. Changing column format
to text helps. But when I would like to have it as number I'm not sure how to do that.

Thanks. And hope to Aqua port will see light of the day sometime.

Hi,

the part for the opening of txt files via File Open dialog started from
spreadsheet is covered by Issue 15274 .

The part for converting numbers with decimal points to dates can be solved by
setting the column type on the import dialog to US/English. In this case the
numbers are converted to numbers with the decimal separator used in the given
locale.
