Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 42982
Shortcut keys need Thai localization
Last modified: 2008-05-17 23:15:20 UTC
For a full Thai localization, we also need to localize shortcut keys as well. Some general shortcuts proposed: 1) Selection: # Select All - Ctrl-ท (ทั้งหมด) # Cut - Ctrl-ต (ตัด) # Copy - Ctrl-ล (ลอก) # Paste - Ctrl-ป (แปะ) 2) Text formatting*: # Bold - Ctrl-น (หนา) # Italic - Ctrl-อ (เอียง) # Underline - Ctrl-ส (เส้นใต้) *characters in text formatting shortcuts are taken from what Pladao Office (Thai localized OOo) visually used in its toolbar icons. We need to compile a list of Thai shortcuts as in [3], but may be after we got a list of shortcuts in OOo 2.0 ([3] is for OOo 1.x). ---- References: [1] Globalization spec http://specs.openoffice.org/g11n/ [2] Localized Shortcuts spec http://specs.openoffice.org/g11n/menus/LocalizedShortcuts.sxw [3] Shortcuts in different localizations of OOo 1.x http://specs.openoffice.org/g11n/menus/ShortcutsOOo1.sxc "
to make the localized shortcuts to be practically fully functional, it also depends on issue 42964 : Localized menu has problem matching menu shortcut with input from keyboard
SBA: Reassigned to samphan
Confirmed.
Task to do (?): - define the general agreement on how to select character for a shortcut, may have to consult other Thai L10n groups http://l10n.opentle.org/wiki/index.php/Accelerator%3B_shortcut - translate language files (which also contains shortcut keys info)
I've got the Thai localized version of Office 2003, and it does NOT localize shortcuts (except of course Alt+underlined letter from menu). I can see disadvantages to localizing shortcuts. Consider the normal Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V trio: they are not really an abbreviation for anything; a user just has to learn it. What makes life easy for a user is that most apps use the same shortcuts. I think it would make life more difficult for most Thai users if OOo used Ctrl-ต, Ctrl-ล, Ctrl-ป when everywhere else in Windows Ctl-X, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are used. Overall, I'm not sure this is a good idea.
Well, thinking about this again, may be I had missed the point that James mentioned. Ok, so it should going to be like this: Accelarator keys: _File (Alt-F), _Edit (Alt-E), F_ormat (Alt-O) --> NEED localization (to keep sync with UI appearences) Shortcuts: Copy (Ctrl-C), Cut (Ctrl-X), Select All (Ctrl-A) --> MUST NOT be localized (generic key agreement, should keep it universal system-wide) Comments are welcome.
I agree with James's comment.
Closing this since we've agreed to localize accelerators but not shortcuts.
