I think the toward sign painted red should fill the free space by width.
Comment 1 haxwell 2005-02-17 23:14:46 UTC
Confirming as a new enhancement.
Comment 2 michael.ruess 2005-02-18 10:22:52 UTC
Reassigned to requirements.

If I got it right, the guys are talking about the "rightarrow" sign, which
should be scalable in length.
Comment 3 imi84 2005-02-18 14:59:10 UTC
you are right the right arrow should have flexible (arbitrary,etc) length
Comment 4 discoleo 2007-08-12 17:21:08 UTC
Please see also issue 60591. I added there some examples from chemistry where
various arrow-types need to be scalable.

Please note, that TEX has these possibilities, see e.g.
   Table 132: chemarrow Extensible Accents
      \autoleftarrow{abc}{def}
      \autorightarrow{abc}{def}
      \autoleftrightharpoons{abc}{def}
      \autorightleftharpoons{abc}{def}
   These symbols are all “reverse accents†in that the two arguments serve,
   respectively, as a superscript and a subscript to the arrows.
   In addition to the symbols shown above, chemarrow also provides
      \larrowfill,
      \rarrowfill,
      \leftrightharpoonsfill, and
      \rightleftharpoonsfill macros.

For an extended list of TEX-symbols, see
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/symbols/comprehensive/symbols-a4.pdf.
