I'm a new user. I just installed the beta 2.0 (actually 1.9.79) version. 
Everything in Writer worked fine until I tried to open a file I had from 
Microdost Word 2003. Does Writer open Word 2003 docs? I see when saving as 
Word doc, the newest version to save as is Word 97/xp. Should I try to import 
instead of open? FYI - The doc I tried is large and has graphics.

Confirmed. Using OOo 1.9.84 on Win 2000 SP4, opening the attached document
caused OOo to crash.

Changing component to Word Processor.

Just FYI.. the attached document opened, edited, and printed with no problems in
Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1).

opens fine, but renders incorrectly with m89 on Linux,
really seems to be Windows only issue

MRU->OD: opening the file results in a loop. It contains many graphics
positioned in tables. But it also looks, that it can only be resolved with the
"table in table" implementation for Word import from issue 25680. Please have a
look.

fixed in cws swqbugfixes30 - changed file:
/sw/source/core/layout/tabfrm.cxx, 1.76.16.2

solution avoids the layout loop by suppressing the format of the lower frames of
a table, if the table doesn't fit on the page and isn't allowed to split any more.
But the layout still doesn't correspond to the one in Microsoft Word, because
the import of table-in-table still moves the inner table into a frame, which can
not break at a page end. This will be solved - as mentioned above - this issue
25680.
