Comment 4 flibby05 2005-03-21 21:19:14 UTC
hi,
every sxw document is a simple zip file.
file.content.xml contains the text.
how many pages is the document. how important?
Comment 5 mgkmgkmgk 2005-03-21 21:37:38 UTC
Thanks for info ;-) It was quite important document and probably it had 31 or
34 pages. I have unziped sxw and content.xml is working - but maybe there is
some way to display it with previous formating ? Wich type of import format
(or software) should I use to open this file ??
Regards

try and find any XML viewer, analyzer, correction tool. you will have to find
the crashing error by looking in the sxw=zip file. any computer guy from
university or office might help you with this.
first analyze and understand the structure, then modify bit by bit and see what
happens.

I set this issue to new.
Maybe tomorrow a developer will have a look at the file.

@mru: can you maybe help?
 (I promise i will try to not again create "help! please recover document..")

recovered plain-text
Comment 9 lohmaier 2005-03-22 18:24:55 UTC
attached you'll find the text of your document.

Did not have a closer look yet as to what is wrong (content.xml is the problem)
- I just removed all the style-decls.

You really should use format-templates instead of hard-formatting...

Well done ;-) I am realy impressed by your help and skill.
Cheers

Tracked down the problem to the section styles. These will make OOo crash.

I'll attach a version of your document without the section styles but with all
other formatting styles.

Comment 13 lohmaier 2005-03-22 19:33:25 UTC
(to developers):
as mentioned before, the section styles will cause the crash. When these are
removed, the document can be opened.

One example of such a style is the following:

<style:style style:name="Sect2" style:family="section">
 <style:properties style:writing-mode="lr-tb">
  <style:columns fo:column-count="2">
   <style:column style:rel-width="6797*" fo:margin-left="0cm"
    fo:margin-right="3.099cm"/>
   <style:column style:rel-width="2499*" fo:margin-left="3.099cm"
    fo:margin-right="0cm"/>
  </style:columns>
 </style:properties>
</style:style>

I'm nor sure whether this is valid (e.g. setting the margin-left to "0cm"
prevents the crash)
Even if the values are not correct, OOo should not crash but try to recover the
document or if that fails refuse to open the document.

OK, I'll sketch how I try to recover documents.
But to not fill this issue with irrelevant information (the way I recover the
document is of no interest for the developers that need to fix this issue) I'll
attach my procedure as attachment to this issue.

(again removing the section styles did help)

> and how to avoid such a problem.?

I guess you're not only using OOo to create and/or modify the document, but also
some external tools. Try to fix these tools.
If you really only use OOo, then try to find out what you did right before the
document became corrupted. I played around with sections, but failed to create a
broken document.

Right now, the only thing that can be improved is that when the document already
is broken - OOo should not crash but refuse to open the document or try to
repair it.
Without the information on how to reproduce the creation of broken documents
(what does the user need to do in order to have OOo create a broken document),
writing broken documents can hardly be avoided (since you don't know what the
problem is and where it could be fixed) - hope this is somewhat understandable..
