Description joeconner 2006-01-04 04:46:03 UTC
I cannot get the x-axis of an x-y graph to dynamically adapt to the values of
the axis data points.

For example, if the x-axis is representative of a series of dates with y data
points associated with each date and an xy chart is constructed so that the
information is properly presented, then if the dates are changed using the same
cells to hold the dates and new y datapoints are created using the same cells as
the old datapoints, the xy graph x-axis does not change to reflect the revised
dates as it should.

Alternately, it would be extremely useful to establish in the axis window a
value by puting a cell rather than requireing a number.

I don't get what you intend to do, sorry. Can you describe more detailed and
more precise what you are doing and what you want to achieve? If you change some
ranges or formats, maybe pressing F9 helps (Tools->Cell Contents->Recalculate).
Comment 3 joeconner 2006-01-04 20:39:48 UTC
OK I will try. I think it will help if I explain the purpose of the spreadsheet
first. I hope to design the spreadsheet to help diabetic people to manage their
diabetes easier.

The first sheet is for data entry. It is simply a running commentary on how
much insulin and of what type and when, and the readings obtained with a
glucometer and when.

The second sheet PARAMETERS is a parameter input so that a range of dates can be
looked at in detail.

The third sheet REPORTS DATA dynamically selects from the first sheet only the
time slice that is selected on the parameter sheet.

The fourth sheet PIE CHART analyzes the dyamic data on the REPORTS DATA sheet
and displays how tightly the blood sugar has been controlled during the selected
dates. These charts dynamically change as the control data changes.

The fifth sheet, DAILY GLUCOSE SPREAD is designed to provide visually how the
glucose varies with time, and provide trends so that insulin adjustments can be
made when needed. This chart is an X-Y graph and is the one that I have not
been able to get to dynamically adjust as the time slices are changed. What I
want is for the X-Axis to always adjust to the dates on the REPORTS DATA sheet,
cell AQ3 to AQ? (however far the dates go down the AQ column).

This is the problem I am trying to crack. Even if I could tell the X-axis to
begin with cell D3 and end with cell E3 on the DAILY GLUCOSE SPREAD sheet that
would do it.

Please get back to me if you need more information about any of this.

hmm, for me the x-axis does update to the values in AQ3++ after changing the
start date parameter, doesn't it for you? try pressing F9
Comment 5 joeconner 2006-01-05 19:16:33 UTC
Pressing F9 has no effect. The left ordinate of the X-axis remains at 12/30/99
which is totally worthless and defeating to what I am trying to do.

Only the right ordinate changes. this results in the valuable part of the graph
schrunched into a skinny slice.

Try it again please, after checking the x-axis box for "automatic." Also, in
the examples I have provided as attachment, notice the dates are supposed to
have the format MM/DD/YY and be in sequence. Notice how screwed up the date
sequences are.
Start: 12/30/99 followed by 9/8/13 then by 5/18/27 then 1/24/41 then 10/3/54
then 6/11/68 then 2/18/82 then 10/28/95 then 7/6/(obscured).

What is THAT all about?

Ok, confirmed on Windows XP Pro SP2 with OOo 2.0.1. The x-axis shows some
unusual values when Chart->X Axis->Scale->Minimum->Automatic is checked.
Comment 12 joeconner 2006-01-09 20:34:58 UTC
DOH, I think I have discovered the problem. The original graph data range
included a blank row above the data. By reseting the rage for only data, and by
checking the source format on the number tab, the issue seems to have been
resolved. I recommend some remarks be put in the troubleshooting help or FAQ
regarding the potential problem if blank rows are included as the first data
element.
