Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 60477
RTF: mailmerge fileds without database should be imported with "filed result" content
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:44:09 UTC
I generate *.RTF (or *.DOC) documents in an UML modeling tool Enterprise Architect. The documents consist of many fields populated with a model information. The documents open fine in Microsoft Word 2003, however in OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 Writer displays unnecessary field names along the field's content. The field names are shadowed and behave like OOo fields with an exception they cannot be hidden nor removed. The only way I found to get rid of the field names is to save document in Word 95 or 6.0 format, open it again (the field names are now displayed as ordinary text) and remove them using Search&Replace dialog with regexp.

confirmed on Windows XP Pro SP2 with OOo 2.0.1; the tables also are not imported properly
MRU->FLR: The RTF document contains MailMerge fields. The import cannot find the database so here the "Field result" should be imported (also see issue 53835 handling the similar problem for WW filter).

It is even worse in OOo 2.2.1: no way to display field contents (see OOoFields.png) at all.

Found this quick and dirty workaround: simply open the RTF with a text editor and delete (i.e. replace with "") every occurence of "MERGEFIELD", obviously without the quotes. The document should be fine now in OOo Writer.
