Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 61476
place the "Apply AutoCorrect" ("AutoFormat->While Typing") Option nearer to the AutoCorrect dialogue or vice versa
Last modified: 2008-12-18 15:03:41 UTC
I write documents in both Norwegian and English. For this and other reasons "Autocorrect" is one of the OOo features I hate the most. It just doesn't work, and as a general rule ruins my documents. There is no easy way to turn off "AutoInCorrect". "Turn off Autocorrect" (or "Turn ON autocorrect" should be the first option that meets the user when they choose Tools -> Autocorrect. Possibly also with an option for "document only"/ "this user only"/"entire OOo installation". The same applies to the spellchecker - I couldn't find "Turn off squiggely red lines" anywhere... Version: OOo 2.0 Novell Edition (from Suse 10 distro) This is a design defect, impossible to choose the correct subcomponent.
to turn off AutoCorrect, choose Menubar->Format->AutoFormat->While Typing to turn off AutoSpellcheck choose the ABC button with the red wavy underline in the toolbar or choose Menubar->Tools->Options->Language Settings->Writing Aids- >Options->Check Spelling as you type but you are right, this is not intuitive
Similar, and equally annoying, problem with OOo Calc: When I write the text (without quotes) "3.2.2006" it is mangled to "03/02/06". THIS IS WRONG for so many reasons! Pressing "undo" doesn't help. Formatting the cell as "General" doesn't help. Yelling at the stupid thing doesn't help. Turning off everything I can find that looks like Automangle doesn't help. At the very least "Undo" should reset whatever Automangle messed up. MS Office XP's drop-down boxes with "I've mangled your text, here is a list of what you may have wanted me to do" would be a LOT better. A big red "stop doing that"- button would be even better.
