Description cxy 2006-03-06 20:19:04 UTC
for scientific literature that is periodically published in updated editions,
numbers for paragraphs are jused more and more, so that references to a specific
paragraph will be correct in the next edition, too, since not depending on page
numbers.

such numbers are written beside (to the outer side of a page of a book) a
paragraph, either in the middle of it or at its top. It doesn't necessary mean
that each paragraph is counted. Paragraphs which are inserted in a later
edition, e.g. between paragraph 2 and 3, is numbered "2a".

not sure if my description helps so i hope this ascii picture makes it clear:

---------------------------------
| texttexttext | texttexttext |
| | texttexttext |
|2 texttexttext | |
| texttexttext | texttexttext 4|
| texttexttext | texttexttext |
| | texttexttext |
| texttexttext | texttexttext |
| texttexttext | |
| | texttexttext 5|
|2atexttexttext | texttexttext |
| texttexttext | texttexttext |
| texttexttext | texttexttext |
| | texttexttext |
|3 texttexttext | |
| texttexttext | texttexttext 6|
|---------------|---------------|

This would be a handy feature (i think for word there is a similar addon),
especially for professors at universities and the like, which write such
scientific books (e.g. a commentary for an act or other literature used in law).

Reassigned to requirements.

Sorry, the picture should show two pages, not a page with two columns. I'm not
sure whether there are also books with columned pages that use numbers for
paragraphs, at least i haven't seen any.

also registers should be able to link entries an paragraph-numbers instead of
entries and page-numbers
Comment 7 rollom 2006-04-25 12:30:03 UTC
See issue 63565 for index entries referring to paragraph numbers etc.
Comment 8 cxy 2007-04-12 19:15:04 UTC
sometimes books not only have numbers for paragraphs, but also small "headlines"
beside the paragraph under its number, like a small summary. This ability should
be added, too.
Comment 9 cxy 2008-02-21 18:08:00 UTC
this might help prevent duplicate issue filings:

in english it's is called "margin number", short "MN",
in german it's called "Randnummer", short "Rn" or "Rdnr"
