Description purveschris 2006-04-26 06:19:30 UTC
It would be useful go be able to select multiple objects and resize them all at
the same time. For example, I would like to be able to select five rectanges,
then from the menu Format --> Position and Size... set the width to 3 cm and
have all five rectangles each take a width of 3 cm.

The present behaviour is to treat the entire selection as a single object and
set the combined width to 3 cm. This can also be useful, but this could also be
achieved by grouping and ungrouping. As it stands, there is now way that I am
away of to set position and size values to several objects at once.

Perhaps the Position and Size box could have a Group checkbox that is available
when multiple objects have been selected. The user could then decide if he
wants the changes applied to each object individually or as a single object
grouped together.

Reassigned.

I really like ooo and I'm more than surprised to find this feature
unimplemented. Really annoying e.g. while working with many individually created
objects. I hope you'll find the time. ;)

AW->grumb: Something like this implies a lot of problems, please take a look at
openoffice.graphics.dev and refer to the discussions titled 'Visual feedback of
selected objects in drawing applications'. There, i tried to describe just some
of the problems You run into when doing something like that. It's not trivial.
Please comment and discuss there, new ideas are always welcome.

I've looked at the thread here...

Can you help me understand how the two topics "visualize multi selection" and
"give objects in a multi selection the same size" are similar?

There is two 'resize modes'.

one of them is implemented: resize the whole group, adjusting relative
positions (albeit that doesn't change the fonts inside the group, which kept me
busy several times now)

the other one is missing, and that's the one this issue is about: resize the
objects in the group, keeping their position.

This latter one would allow to give differently sized objects the same size, or
to resize them relatively, keeping them where they are, which may well make
sense in connected diagrams.

I'd love to stand corrected but the valuable discussion about multi selection is
unrelated to this request at hand.

btw, the different resize mode could be visualized and activated like rotation,
and in the 'position and size' dialogue it could be a selection

(*) resize whole selection <-- default
( ) resize individually

tooltips:
  resize whole selection:
resize the selection as a whole,
     adjusting the relative positions

  resize individually:
apply new size to each selected object individually,
     maintaining the positions of each.

Ah, and since I'm at the dialogue: an "apply" button in format dialogues which
does changes without closing the dialogue would be *real* nifty, too...

in SmartDraw you can resize a selection of objects to that of the first object
selected (it is shown differently from the others with black resizing points, the
others are shown in grey). I am assuming that the issue is still outstanding in
version 3.2
