It would be nice to apply column formatting not just to pages but to indivodual
paragraphs and paragraph styles. This allows people to create, for example,
styles  with mixed column formattings.

Do you know sections? I think they do what you want and much more.

Sections are great but as I understand them, you can't format sections using
styles and you can't automatically apply sections to paragraphs. To create mixed
column formattings using sections you would have to go through the document
yourself and apply them manually, would you not?
