Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 67048
pasted web images are not shown.
Last modified: 2009-04-23 13:58:18 UTC
Hello. I've tryed to cut and paste page into oowriter, but images were not shown. Just rectangulars with some text inside. I asked on forums and I was suggested to check that may be problem is because image url starts not with http://www. but http://img. in my case. And I tried another pages and thew worked, and images there started with http://www . But may be problem is because images are from another site, I do not know. So forum messages are: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=156122 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=22766 So I think this is bug. TAI, Peter.
With OOo 2.0.3 on FC5, I can paste images that start with http://imageshack.us . Also, I can paste the image http://img.ferra.ru/pubimages/64619.jpg you referenced in the forum. In either case, I see a temporary placeholder for less than 3 seconds until the image is retrieved. Is your computer behind a firewall or an HTTP proxy? Check your settings in Tools->Options->Internet->Proxy. Is there a particular web page that you would like to copy and paste? Do you use Openoffice.org provided by your Linux distribution or official packages from http://download.openoffice.org ?
Hm. Right. I can cut&paste the image itself without any problems. But if I paste image and some text around from the following article: http://www.ferra.ru/online/digiphoto/25525/ images are not shown. For example take big image of camera and 2 strings before and 2 strings after. I have oo built from sources (gentoo packages). I have nothing unordinary in my network setup (just dns, IP, default gateway), and as I told on forum, some pages with images that I cut&paste are shown without any problems. So oo can connect to internet.
I'm on another similar system now (OOo 2.0.3 Linux), and the http://img.ferra.ru/pubimages/64619.jpg image doesn't load at all. OpenOffice.org sends OPTIONS, PROPFIND, and HEAD, and the server replies with errors. However, OOo doesn't send a GET. On the other hand, http://www.google.com/intl/en/images/logo.gif does load. In this case, OOo sends all the same HTTP requests, but then OOo sends a GET which succeeds.
Reassigned to ES.

I am running Win XP and also have a problem with internet images. I have been creating & editing web pages for several months using ver 1.x with no issues concerning the images from the web. I upgraded to ver 2.0.3 after a harddrive replacement and now the same web pages that worked fine in ver 1.x will not retrieve the images. Writer locks up completely and will not respond. In playing around, I was able to get writer to download a very small gif file without locking up. I checked the internet connect options and did not find anything that helped the issue.
Created attachment 42043 [details] sample document that describes the problem
I have a similar experience. However, I don't think the url of the image is the problem. I attached a writer document that demonstrates the problem. I pasted a section from http://nl.openoffice.org that contains two images. One of those is shown in the document, the other one isn't. The url of both images starts with http://nl.openoffice.org, so according to the theories in this issue both images shouldn't load. I think the problem is with the file type. The first image is a jpg file, the second is a png file. It seems to me that the png's are the ones that fail to load. I tested this with images on several other websites and my theory seems hold.
Sorry to disturb, but is there any progress here? OO became much less useful with this bug as it really convenient to edit some web-pages in OO before printing. Currently I've tryed to cut&paste another web page and now seems that none of pictures are actually showed in OO. Even if url is of www.site.com /*/img form. I'm sure that I have ordinary connection. Just ip address, DNS and default route. No proxies, nothing special. If some tests are necessary I'll be happy to help. BTW. Is there any way to force OO to download image mentioned in File name? It's really pain to download pictures separately and then insert them back into document... BTW2. Why this issue is still UNCONFIRMED when other people also experience this bug? In any way, thank you for your time.
Confirm. I think we need solutions for this soon. as this is usability and regression. Thanks
Trying to summarize... @volkov_peter: I cannot reproduce the3 problem with missing pictures. Even when selecting some text before and after the picture of the big camera (your comments form Thu Jul 6 04:55:50), the picture is correctly displayed (tested on Solaris and Windows). @aziem: I can't either reproduce your problem with http://img.ferra.ru/pubimages/64619.jpg. @weberbr: this look like another problem (freeze, Time out) probably addressed by issue 7553. @broxtor: neither can I reproduce the png problem: I see both graphics in your document. It would be another problem anyway because other reporter have problems with jpeg files. @volkov_peter: please give the new URL you are talking about in your last comment. Describe the exact portion of page you are selecting, copying and pasting. Which OS. Please detail your settings under Tools - Options - Internet - Proxies. Which OOo version are you currently using?
es, I'm using OO-2.1 built from sources. Gentoo Linux distribution. $ emerge -pqv openoffice [ebuild R ] app-office/openoffice-2.1.0 USE="branding cairo cups dbus eds firefox gnome gstreamer gtk java kde pam sound -binfilter -debug -ldap -odk -seamonkey -webdav" LINGUAS="en en_GB en_US ru [sniped other disabled languages]" When I opened bug, I did manage to get some pictures in OO. Currently I have no pictures at all. Fex, take www.gentoo.org in firefox, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, switch to OOwriter and Ctrl+V. No pictures are shown. I have default connection settings. I even removed .ooo-2.0 directory and then start oowriter2, repeat above actions and no pictures. (screenshot follows) BTW. I just noticed that in console where I started oowriter the following errors: (process:13773): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed But seems that this they are not related to images, as I've opened www.mail.ru selected the image "mail.ru" in the left top corner pasted (no image in OO) and no Gdk-CRITICAL error. My networking is very simple. I have wireless bridge which gives me IP from 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. The bridge is connected to our provider IP 10.10.146.236(/16). Which in turn is connected somewhere else, but I do not this you are interested in this details... Under Tools - Options - Internet - Proxy I have None selected and Entry boxes disabled. If you need more details from my build process just tell me where I can get it for you. In any way thank you for your tests.
Created attachment 43666 [details] Image to illustrate the problem. Paste from www.gentoo.org
I can confirm Peters problem, copy and pasting text with pictures into OOo leaves me with empty boxes. This is on Linux, OOo 2.1.0, the only difference is that I'm using GNOME while Peter seems to use KDE.
OOo is really weird with web images. I've copies piece of Wikipedia page in Writer. After small delay all but one images are shown. But when I Edit - Link... and broke links (this should download all images and store them locally), many images just "disappeared". BTW, all wikipedia images are in PNG format. And when I try to Insert - Picture - From file, with correct URL of images, OOo says "Graphic filter not found".
I found out when you selecting text and images on a webpage where the <img src> tag contains the full path (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/59/Current_event_marker.s vg/50px-Current_event_marker.svg.png), the image is copied successful in writer. But is it's a relative source like (./images/picture.png), then it's not working. This is maybe normal because Writer doesn't know where to look for the image. BUT why the hell, is microsoft office knowing that well? And if I copy only a picture on the net without selecting text, it's also working fine. Any idea or workaround?
es, could you, please, return to this problem? I'm using oo 2.3.1 and the only difference I have is that I do not see *any* images at all now. You can not reproduce - that's ok, but what should I look at to see the reasons for this problem? Are there any possibilities to debug this problem on my side?
I have checked all found websites given in this issue with OOo 2.4 and DEV300m5 (developer snapshot on OOo 3.0 codeline) under Windows. All images from these websites shown in Writer after copy-and-paste. Please consider that linked images are loaded by certain background threads - Thus, you have to wait a moment (depending on your Internet connection speed) for the display of the images. Thus, changing issue status to WORKSFORME. The checked websites are: http://img.ferra.ru/pubimages/64619.jpg http://www.tomtom.com/lib/doc/go5/refman/Main_menu_eng.html http://www.ferra.ru/online/digiphoto/s25525/ http://www.mail.ru/ http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home http://www.gentoo.org
I also checked the given ODF text document <test_issue67048.odt> -> works fine. I also checked the websites and the given ODF text document with OOo 2.4 under Solaris -> works fine. OD->ES: Please confirm and close this issue.
Sorry, but it doesn't work for me with OO 2.4 on Xp and on Vista. Not for the given websites, not for other ones. I tried http://www.gentoo.org and notice that he doesn't copy the full path to the photo and displays only an empty box with the name of the picture (gentoologo) with path /images/icon-penguin.png. I use Internet Explorer.
Sorry, this still does not work here (Gentoo linux) with openoffice-2.4 and as you see this does not work for some windows users too...
Well, I think we'll have to split this issue because it shows *different* bug with approximately the same consequences. @volkov_peter/linux: I cannot reproduce it on Unix with Firefox and a current *original* OOo version. Please try followings: - Verify that "tools - Options - Writer - View - Graphics and Objects" is checked - double click on a missing picture to show its properties, go to the tabpage "Picture". What is the URL to the picture? If "http://www...", there is a connection problem, if "/picturename.ext", see below. - maybe remove your user install dir? @biosbvba/Internet Explorer: reproduced. While Firefox on Windows gives the full path to a picture, IE only submits a relative path, either to the basename of the site or to the Internet temp dir. In both cases, we can't retrieve the pictures from a truncated path. It looks like an IE special feature we can't workaround. This does not seem to be the problem addresses by volkov_peter. Please open a new issue for the IE problem (but I think, we'll have to close it as "WONTFIX" then... :( ) @MBA: comments?
@volkov_peter/linux: I cannot reproduce it on Unix with Firefox and a current *original* OOo version. I'm using version built from sources. Please try followings: - Verify that "tools - Options - Writer - View - Graphics and Objects" is checked It is checked. - double click on a missing picture to show its properties, go to the tabpage "Picture". What is the URL to the picture? If "http://www...", there is a connection problem, if "/picturename.ext", see below. Not URL but File name is: http://www.gentoo.org/images/gtop-www.jpg - maybe remove your user install dir? What is this? I'm installing from sources using "emerge openoffice". Even if this is a connection problem, but this is connection problem in openoffice only, as all other application work. As I already told, I do not have anything special in my netoworking setup. Currently I have direct ip address: $ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:60:B0:DF:A5 inet addr:195.209.218.137 Bcast:195.209.218.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:196960 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:98059 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:96195623 (91.7 Mb) TX bytes:14550741 (13.8 Mb) Base address:0x8000 Memory:c0240000-c0260000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback [Skipped lo setup] Also this bug is reproducible at home where I'm behind NAT and anywhere in the world. I've tried with empty ~/.ooo-2.0 directory. If this helps I can create you account on system with openoffice sources and binaries built from that sources and nx access there so you could try to debug this problem. Sorry I've tried to debug this myself but openoffice is too big and I have few time to get closer to this problem... Thank you for your time spent on this issue.
And small update. Binary version (app-office/openoffice-bin) works here. So seems that this is problem in our build. Suka, do you have any ideas?
It doesN'T seem to be an OOo native buid problem. No further info since April. Closing as invalid.

Well we found new details so it's possible that you help us fixing this bug finally. Thus reopening. The problem was localized to webdav USE flag, which when enabled fixes this problem. Currently webdav useflag enables the following configure options: --enable-neon --with-system-neon --with-system-openssl. Thus this bug is reproducible if you build openoffice with --disable-neon --without-system-neon --without-system-openssl. Is this information enough to fix this problem?
Well, just to make sure. Please do not drop the configure switch for neon(webdav). The reason is written below. (from https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223785) ------- Comment #8 From Hanno Meyer-Thurow 2008-06-02 13:51:55 0000 [reply] ------- (In reply to comment #7) > Hanno, what do you mean? Give us examples. Your report in OOo IZ states: "... may be problem is because image url starts not with http://www. but http://img. in my case. And I tried another pages and thew worked, and images there started with http://www . ..." So, ..., as far as I see they should fix their engine to load images from any site without the need of webdav. Sounds just broken to me to use webdav there. Instead it should just use curl. Which it does for URLs starting with "http://www". Not? :)
> Your report in OOo IZ states: > "... may be problem is because image url starts not with http://www. but Sorry but that's was the issue on Wed Jul 5 18:01:00 +0000 2006. Now things changed and on Sat Feb 16 08:24:27 +0000 2008 I wrote that I do not see *ANY* images. What's your point?
The question then, why OOo has curl and neon is still valid. Should not be one of them enough? ;)
I will take over this issue. It's perhaps a duplicate to http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=78894. Please stay tuned till the cws was integrated into the master and try it again.
changed component to ucb
Created attachment 54318 [details] Use XVID codec to play AVI (reproduction of bug)
it turned out that connections (tcp) issues of http://img.ferra.ru/ was the root cause. I implemented a fallback in the GET method of the ucb to handle that. --> fixed - Added to cws tkr14.
TKR -> TM: Please verify. Copy & Paste all content from http://www.ferra.ru/online/digiphoto/25525/ into the writer. It is possible that not all images (e.g the big ones) will be shown because of the bad internet connection to the server. All the other should already be tested with issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=78894.
checked and verified in cws tkr14 -> OK !
