Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 68555
Goal Seek leads to Calc hang-up
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:11:21 UTC
Hi. please ... - open the attached spreadsheet - start the goal seek with the parameters shown in the attached screenshot: It seems to never find an end. Calc hangs! (A friend told me about this bug. He said that Excel handles Goal Seek for similar spread sheets without problems and finds the values in a short time. But I haven't tested Excel.)

confirmed with 2.0.3 and m180 on WinXP and Linux Goal seek works fine up to result cell F108, starting with F109 OOo loops. Opening the same document in version 1.1.5 the goal seek brings no result, but OOo doesn't loop. OOo loops with even easier structured formulas, it seems to me, that the problem is the number of iterations. I'll attach another test document, where the goal seek works fine up to result cell C200 and loops from C201.

Hi Eike, please have a look
Accepted. I don't see this is a P2, goal seek in combination with deeply nested/stacked dependencies is not very common => P3.
@es: This is a common used way of calculation. And such bugs are also a reason way SO/OOo ist not so accepted in business. P2 is ok because of the crash.
typing error: es -> er
You can also download such a spreadsheet (XLS) from http://www.klicktipps.de/download.htm (Annuitätendarlehen berechnen) And this way to use the goal seek to calculate the payment per month is very common! Eike: Ist it possible to have this bug fixed in the next releases?
Can't promise, otherwise I would had set the 2.1 target.
Is issue 84863 a duplicate of this issue?

4 years and such a simple show stopping feature has not been fixed? At the very least could you add a warning so that users don't waste time hoping that if they "wait a little bit longer" it will eventually work? (This would probably take 2 seconds to do so hopefully you will consider it - seeing as the 3 minutes it would take to fix such a simple bug properly is obviously just too much to ask)
