Description temcom01 2007-01-19 11:20:20 UTC
Hello!

The following wordfile:

http://www.actutem.com/trad/Modulation num V1.2.doc

cannot be opened with OOo. It opens OK with Word (I have written it myself) and
I am changing now to OOo... however I cannot open this specific file which even
shuts down completely OOo (all other wordfiles opens Ok with OOo).

Regards and many thanks

Otto

Confirming with both m197 and m199 on WinXP - Writer crashes.

temcom01,
if possible, please provide file without spaces in it's name so that it is
simplier to download the file for local examination.

MRU->HBRINKM: there seems to be something wrong during the import process; it
stalls right at the end of the progress.

Confirmed OOo V2.1
Windows XP SP2
Comment 5 papadopoulos_elias 2007-01-21 20:39:35 UTC
I can confirm the problem on my machine which is running Windows XP SP2 with OOo
v2.1.

I did some testing with the file posted and here are my discoveries;

-I copied and pasted the whole posted file to a new word file (and saved the
file). The first thing I noticed was that the new document I created was 47
pages long as apposed to the original document which was 44 pages long. I then
attempted to open the original document with OOo, the file seem to have loaded
1/4 before OOo crashed. I attempted to open the new word file in OOo and it
started loading but crashed near the end of the loading cycle.

-I then created a new word file only copying and pasting the 1st two pages of
the original posted file and saved the document. I then opened the new in OOo
and the document loaded fine.

After some more testing I found that if one were to copy and paste the 1st 13
pages of the original document into a new word document, save the document, and
open the document in OOo, OOo will load the document without crashing. I also
found that if I were to copy and paste pages 13-14 into a new word file, save
the file, and open that file with OOo, OOo would crash.

I also noticed that copying those two pages from the original document and
pasting then in a new word file provided me with 3 full pages as apposed to two
pages, where the second page of the new document was a full blank page.

I am running Windows XP SP2 with OpenOffice 2.1 installed. I tried opening the
supplied file in writer and it crashed. After trimming the size of the file (44
pages) I was able to narrow down the problem to the epsilon type symbol on the
first line of page 14. The character/picture right after "avec a". The word file
I'm attaching contains just that character and it will crash open writer.

“I crashed each time when I opened the attached word document using the Open-
Office 2.0.3 and 2.1 build on Windows XP Home Edition and Professional Edition
(Service Pack 2).
When I tried to open any other normal word text-based and a considerable small
document of any .doc/.odt format on Windows XP Home and Professional Editions
(Service Pack 2) I was able to load the document without any problem.
I was also able to open the same attached word document using the Open-Office
2.0.3 and 2.1 build when I rebooted into Linux Content OS Release 4.4, and
opened this document using the (Kernel Red 2.6.9-42.03.EL.CSE.smp) Linux build
without any problems or crashes.”

Hello,
many thanks to all for your help.

I have used small black/white gif images (6x9 pixels) with math - caracters and
other symbols not so easy available in Text.

However I have cleared up my text.. a douzend different symbols.. and replaced
them with "special" caracters : it works now fine with OOo which is just great!

So the patch seems to be : do not use very small gifs in a textfile ;-)
