Description fchevalier 2007-05-04 19:45:48 UTC
Since version 2.2 it would seem that opening a document from Outlook does not
work any more if OOO is not charged at the starting of the session.

@fchevalier
Please contribute more detailed information concerning
- your Operating System
- Detailed description how you try to open a document from Outlook
(or Outlook Express?). Screenshots might be helpful.
- What OOo version did you use before 2.2?
- What kind of document did you try to open (.sxw? .ods? ...?)?
- does that problem appear for all OOo document types
- What happens if you try to open some OOo document?
Comment 2 Rainer Bielefeld 2007-06-01 10:50:53 UTC
DUP of invalid Issue 70221?
Comment 3 fchevalier 2007-06-01 19:17:23 UTC
- your Operating System

Windows XP

- Detailed description how you try to open a document from Outlook
(or Outlook Express?). Screenshots might be helpful.

When I try to open a document from Outlook 2000 (not express) the document goes
on tempory folder and then disapear before openoffice launch. If ooo is open on
the start of the system it's work correctly

- What OOo version did you use before 2.2?
I used OOO 2.0.2 and all works correctly

- What kind of document did you try to open (.sxw? .ods? ...?)?
all documents

fchevalier,
please specify if OO produces any error message or just opens with blank
document.

@fchevalier:
Please contribute some more information!

1. Some more information concerning the documents you want to open
  (E-Mail-Attachmeint? Eomething else?
2. Step by step instruction how you proceed to open the document (Doubleclick?
   Menu ...?)
3. Information concerning the "Temp" document: If it really disappears during the
open process, I believe that it is deleted by OS

Without having Outlook availiable this is what happens. When opening an attached
ODF file Outlook stores it in the Temp folder, starts the associated application
with the tempfile name and after that application exits it deletes the temp file.

In OOo 2.1 the associated application was so0ffice.exe whereas in OOo 2.2 the
associated application is swriter.exe, scalac.exe etc. Those executables are
just wrappers for "soffice.exe -writer" etc. that terminate immediatly after
executing soffice.exe and do not wait for soffice.exe process termination.

When using the quickstarter it will just work by chance due to a timing issue
because then soffice.exe comes up and opens the file fast enough before
swriter.exe terminates and outlook is able to delete the file (which is locked
by soffice.exe if already openend).

This will not happen with other applications (like Thunderbird, Firefox, Outlook
Express, IE) because they only delete temporary files if the total amount of
temporary files exceed a boundary.

What Outlook does is not really that clever - It tries to avoid leaving files in
the temp directory but if you start OOo and exit Outlook before you exited OOo
the temp file is left in the temp directory anyway.

Because assigning swriter.exe, scalc.exe as default applications is needed for
Vista support the wrapper executables have to stay alive until OOo exits.
