This should be a trivial thing to fix, as there is already a checkbox in OOo
settings/options to enable/disable icons in menus.

So we should change the default bahaviour to "disable icons". This could give us
a small speed boost too :) Mac applications normally do not have icons in the menus.

Those (developers) who like the icons, could still enable them from the OOo
options/settings.

I don't agree. I think keeping icons in menu is useful and follow the Apple HIG.
(see
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/XHIGMenus/chapter_16_section_3.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000356-TPXREF116)
"You may use icons in menu items if the icon is something the user can learn to
associate with specific functionality in your application or if the icon
represents something unique." This is exactly what OpenOffice does. Having icons
in menus, helps the user to identify actions in the toolbar and those in the
menu bar, for example the scissors with the "cut" action.

Moreover some Apple applications have icons in their menus; the Finder, Safari,
the system preferences are some examples (and there may be others).

Ismael: right.

We should only line up the menu entries (which is surely diferent issue).

Ahem.

If you look at Safari and Finder and think for a while, you'll notice that there
are _specific_ uses for the icons. They are used for special reasons, not as a
default rule.

That is exactly what the HIG documentation says. i.e. use in carefully chosen
situations, not everywhere!

OpenOffice.org, on the other hand, infests the menus with countless icons, which
additionally look quite out-of-place in Mac OS X graphical style.

This is valid issue per
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Mac_OS_Porter_Team_at_WWDC_2007
and should be fixed.

Fixed in cws aquavcl05 as part of issue 79755. Marking fixed.
Comment 9 b.osi.ooo 2008-02-28 14:40:19 UTC
since 79755 is verified, this one should be verified, too with this.

Closing resolved issue.
