Description cpgeevan 2007-11-02 13:51:06 UTC
Computer - Pentium 4 3 GHz with 512 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional SP2
Open Office 2.3

Issue: with copy/paste tables in writer

1) Copied a few cells from Openoffice Spredsheet
2) Pasted it in a ASCI text editor - Notetab or Microsoft Notepad (both were tried)
3) Copied this from the text editor
4) Pasted this inside a table already existing in the Openoffice Writer - all
applications are open
5) Openoffice crashed - crash report already filed

The crash happened whenever this sequence is repeated. It is perfectly
replicable on my system.

There is no crash when the pasting is not inside an existing table! Crash
occurred only when the data is pasted inside an existing table in writer.

I lost lot of work and has stopped using because of this problem. I need to
transfer lots of data from spreadsheet into writer.

I do not want to embed it as a Openoffice Spreadsheet. Want it as a simple table
in writer.

I do not find anyone else reporting this.

Hm, I cannot reproduce this with my own sample files.
Could you please tell me which of your email address you entered in the crash
report? I need it to find it in the report database. Thanks a lot!

Additionally, the source spreadsheet could be helpful, please attach to this issue.

The crash happened repeatedly. Crash report was sent three or four times.

Now I am also not able to reproduce the same condition in the same or new document.

I was re-thinking about the problem: We have repeatedly transfered data from MS
Word and Excel into the document prior to the crash.

Also, the document was initially a word file. So it is likely that the root of
this issue is in porting, save as doc, etc.

At this stage it is not possible to reproduce the condition.

Yet, I have this request:

The current copy/paste of tabulated data from OpenOffice Spreadsheet to Writer
needs improvements.

a) The embedding of the spreadsheet in the writer must be an option
b) Another option, similar to paste special, to copy the spreadsheet data as a
writer table must be added. It seems very straight forward to do this.

Explanation for (b) above:

a) Copy from ods (speadsheet) b) paste into a text editor c) copy from the text
editor; paste into writer; select the pasted text;

Then, Openoffice , menu: Tables > Convert > Text to Table

Must be possible to do this without the text editor,

Regards,

Geevan

MRU->AMA: now have found the report in our database. Have a look at stack id
1228794.
I am not able to reproduce the problem with my test files, but maybe you can see
something from the stack. there, it is reported (at least two times from
different persons), that pasting into a Writer table from an external text
editor leads to a crash in OOo.

ama->mru:
The crash stack shows me that not the insertion causes the crash but a Redo
action. When a new action (in this case the insertion from clipboard) performs
the redo stack will be deleted. So it looks like just before the insertion was
called an action has been undone. We need to find out what happens just before
the insertion.
Sorry to say this, but I cannot read more from the crash stack.
And I cannot reproduce this issue even with the attached files :-(

cpgeevan,
can you still reproduce the crash with OOo 2.3.1?

Referring to your request:
did you already try to paste the contents into Writer via "Edit.Paste special"
and use the "RTF" option?
Comment 11 michael.ruess 2007-12-14 13:35:53 UTC
We cannot reproduce the crash here with the given data.
As AMA already pointed out, there must have been a kind of Undo/Redo action
together with the insertion of the clipboard content.
Also, the crash has been reported by some other people - but "only" for the OOo
2.3 build. For the OOo 2.3.1 build, there has not been a report until now. So
please try out if OO 2.3.1 works more reliable here; I will close the issue at
first, until some could report something different for 2.3.1. Thanks for your
patience!
