Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 87342
Fixed-pitch font rendering not consistent
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:22:44 UTC
Fixed-pitch font rendering not consistent (from line to line). Graphics characters (vert & horiz bars, crosses, and corners) don't line up, esp. when mixed with alpha chars. Problem is only in horizontal alignment, vertical is OK. Problem extends to printed copy, problem happens in Linux version (latest Ubuntu, OOw) as well. Tried all fixed-pitch fonts on both OSs. I have .odt example file, need a way to send it to you... Probably doesn't affect a lot of users, but I really want to use OOw for this book. Please don't send me back to Word! Thanks, Al
I cannot reproduce the problem with an OOc2.4RC6 on WinXP. I have tested several fonts and the block symbols fit together without problems. Which font do you use? Please try the newest version http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html Please attach a document, which shows the error. Please use a high zoom and make a screenshot so that we can see the problem.
Created attachment 52261 [details] several fonts and sizes
It seems to be a rounding problem. Also the properties of the fonts are involved. I see the same problem in OOo2.4RC6 on WinXP with some fonts, some sizes and some zooms.
I agree. I see the same things in 2.3.1. In addition to the misalignment of the vertical lines, they also begin to separate at larger sizes, and bleed into the characters at smaller ones. Printouts do show the same problem as the display (WYSIWYG) I don't care about the screen, but obviously the print out must be good, because it will the printing master. I'm not used to the speed which you guys responded, having been a Micro$oft user for many years! Good job! IAC, there's a long time frame on this project, so hopefully, it will be fixed before I'm finished with the book. Thanks, Al
I guess, this will be no issue which will be fixed soon, because it do not affect the normal usage of Writer. But if someone is interested in it, he/she can work on it, OOo is open source. If you get a gap between the lines, you should try changing line space from default "single" to "fixed" or "proportional". You can use "fixed" with the actual character size (you can enter for example 12pt and need not to calculate it yourself) or a little bit smaller. In "proportional" a setting smaller than 100% should remove the gap. You can use different paragraph styles for different sizes. You should also try several fonts, 'Cumberland' and 'Courier New' for example work better for me than 'Lucida Console'.
MRU->HDU: compare the different "positions" of the characters between the lines (on the different pages).
I'm having the same issue in 3.0.0 on Windows XP.
