Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 95287
missing currency - XCF XOF
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:13:24 UTC
According to an Ubuntu user from Africa there are some missing currency options and possibly mis-described ones as well. I verified this is still the case with official 3.0.0. The original Ubuntu bug report. " Not specific to Ubuntu, but the XOF currency (and possibly X?F other currencies) is (are) missing in all 2.x (current is 2.4.1 updated on today) and 3.0 dev (in test on another Ubuntu platform + on Windows Xp Pro SP2) versions of OpenOffice. I report it here because I have not been to report directly at OpenOffice.org. Well, as my English is not so good, I'll try to explain in English with a few French words nested. The only X?F currency present in OOo is XAF, which means "CFA Francs for Center Africa" (not for all french-speaking Africa). When it was done, as there were two many french-speaking countries in Africa, two (2) currencies were made : XAF for center Africa (Cameroon, Gabon, and probably a few other ones) and XOF for West Africa (Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, perhaps Senegal too -- I'm not sure, I live in Benin). Even the banks managing these currencies (BCEAO : Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest for XOF zone, I don't remember the name for XAF zone) were not allowed to change bills between them; I have been in Cameroon (in Douala and Limbé) a few years ago, and (a) my French francs (XOF) from Benin were not allowed there, and (b) no, even the local desk of my bank (Ecobank) couldn't change my bills for local French francs, so it's not a joke, but really serious. I fear that using XAF currency in place of XOF one in invoices or such documents may cause legal troubles, too. I think there are also XCF (or something like that) for far French territories (DOM/TOM : Domaines d'Outre-Mer/Territoires d'Outre-Mer), but I'm not sure -- I've never been to Tahiti. Of course, what I expect to happen is the adding of the full list of X?F currency, with detailed names "XAF Songa" is a bit short and perhaps not even true -- what is Songa ? "
There are various other currencies missing as well like XAG, XCD, XPD, XPF, etc See the following url which probably has most of the world's currencies. http://www.xe.com/ucc/full/
Currencies offered in OOo are part of the locale data of a specific locale. So, as long as the locale data does not exist, the currency will not be offered in the list. A user can always create a customized number format though, such as #,##0.00 [$XOF] where the enclosing [$...] designates a currency format, opposed to a plain string to be appended such as 0"XOF". Locale data files can quite easily be generated with the generator available at http://www.it46.se/localegen/ For technical details and semantics of elements please see the generator's documentation and the comments in the locale data DTD file http://svn.services.openoffice.org/ooo/trunk/i18npool/source/localedata/data/locale.dtd and as a sample locale data file for example the en_US locale http://svn.services.openoffice.org/ooo/trunk/i18npool/source/localedata/data/en_US.xml Btw, the only normative reference for ISO 4217 currency codes being available online is http://www.iso.org/iso/support/faqs/faqs_widely_used_standards/widely_used_standards_other/currency_codes/currency_codes_list-1.htm Regarding "Songa": that's "Sango" instead (at least in the English UI), a language of Central African Republic. The only thing I can do with this issue is set the 'needhelp' keyword for locale data to be created. Each locale data file should be attached to a separate issue though, so we can process them individually.
