Description crbell 2003-05-25 00:31:05 UTC
I am seeing a persistent problem withe the word processor locking up when I open
the Open Office.org Writers Guide (writers_guide_en_1.0.1.sxw) file:

http://www.ooodocs.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=24

and change the view to on-line layout. The view changes to the on-line layout
and looks normal but soon the Writer application locks up. Using the Gnome
System Monitor I can see the memory Open Office is using continously
incrementing even though I am not doing anything in the document other than
viewing it. Trying to close the application doesn't work and I have to kill the
app manually.

This occurs with both OpenOffice.org 1.1 Beta 1 and Beta 2 but does not occur
with OpenOffice 1.0.3. In version 1.0.3 this document seems to work fine even in
the on-line layout view.

Incidentally, I'm running Slackware 9.0 Linux on an AMD Athlon 650.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled each version cleanly and the problem is
reproducible on my system every time.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else can or cannot reproduce this problem on
their Linux system.

At first I could not reproduce your problem on Debian woody, kde3.1.1
with OOo1.1beta2.

But then I minimized OOo. When I wanted to reactivate the OOo Window,
the "soffice" process began consuming mem and cpu as you describe,
without ever reappearing on screen.
Had to kill "soffice".

confirming.
Comment 2 mmenaz 2003-05-26 11:36:43 UTC
I've OO 1.1b2 and Win2K sp2, and Writer frozens after opening a
document (full of tables, 89K) that works perfectly with 1.02. The
program loads, I can see a page, but after 2 seconds the cursor
disappears, the program is frozen and CPU usage is 100%. I have to
kill the process.
Could it be the same issue, or is it different?
The info in my document are "reserved", so if you need it you have to
explain me how to send it only to developers, would not like it being
available for everybody somewhere in this site or some ftp.
thanks

Comment 5 mmenaz 2003-05-28 14:22:24 UTC
Sorry, I'm not very familiar with this bugzilla, and I've lost all the
text here when clicked the "attach file" link :(
The file attached must be opened with the cursor only few lines under
the "index". Wait ONLY until the cursor appears, then press ctrl+End
to go to the bottom. After few seconds, the program locks up.
Beware that if you wait much longer, you can go to the bottom without
locks up. I've tried with spell autocheck set to true and to false,
with the same result.
The attached file of my previous message is NOT reserved (I've found a
file with the problem that does not contain reserved information), so
use it for test without problems.

Duplicated hang with attachment id=6494 on windows 2000 with OOo1.1beta2.
But this time it only led to 100% cpu usage, not touching mem at all.
(As far as I can see from W2k task manager)

Attachment id=6494 works for me with OOo1.1beta1.

Comment 7 h.ilter 2003-06-04 14:09:22 UTC
HI->FME: It is easier to reproduce with Linux and win98 than win_xp.
Comment 8 frank.meies 2003-06-04 14:49:54 UTC
FME->AW: For me, it looks like a problem with caused by connectors. In
a current m3, the document at
http://www.ooodocs.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=24
shows lots of huge drawing objects. In 6.0 they look fine. Could you
please have a look?

Writers Guide document that locks up OpenOffice.org Writer
Comment 10 crbell 2003-06-29 20:41:37 UTC
Well, since I don't know what the test_crash.sxw file somebody
attached to this bug report has to do with the problem I originally
reported, and since I haven't really seen any information, patches,
etc. for this bug in some time, I have attached the actual document I
originally reported as locking up OOo on Linux. I have since tried OOo
1.0.3.1 and OOo 1.1 beta1 as well as 1.1beta2 and this document locks
up on all of them on Slackware 9 Linux on my athlon 650 (with 386M
ram) as well as my Red Hat 9 Linux on my PII-400 (with 256Meg ram).

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks -

Chuck Bell

AW: Thanks for the file, and sorry for the long delay. I'll take a
look at it...
Comment 12 crbell 2003-07-15 14:44:27 UTC
Well, I just installed a fresh clean OpenOffice.org1.1RC and this bug
is still here. :-(

Opening the referenced document seemed to work ok but as soon as I
switched to on-line view, memory usage started climbing, Writer locked
up, and memory continued to climb ad-infinitum. The application
refused to close and had to kill the app manually.

I sure hope this gets fixed before 1.1 is released. Is this problem
OpenOffice.org Writer itself or is it just the Writers Guide document?

In any event, Writer shouldn't leak and lock.

Chuck Bell

Comment 13 crbell 2003-07-15 15:22:51 UTC
On closer inspection this lock-up seems to occur in on-line view when
minimizing Writer, switching desktops or workspaces, or switching to
any other applications in X-Windows. For instance, simply switching to
the gnome-system monitor results in Writer locking up and it's screen
not even being redrawn.

Incidentally, I'm running XFree86 4.3.0 but have not tried this any
other versions of XFree86 yet.

Hope this helps -

Chuck

changing back version to 1.1beta2.

@crbell: Please don't change the version field. It is meant to show
the version where the bug occured for the first time.

Comment 17 derekhtodd 2003-07-30 12:04:41 UTC
Should be issue 17228 - sorry
Comment 18 derekhtodd 2003-08-02 10:47:51 UTC
issue 17627 and issue 17701 also appear to me to be duplicates of this.

5 duplicates now in total.

This is an easy to trigger dataloss bug to those who use online layout
view for editing (hang is triggered by minimising window when bullet
or nonbreaking hyphen contained in document).

I strongly believe priority should be corrected to P2 due to dataloss,
and Target Milestone upped to OOo 1.1.1 (on the assuption that it's
too late to pursue this for 1.1).
Comment 19 klas 2003-08-05 12:53:01 UTC
It cannot be too late for 1.1; a release that on all platforms (e.g.
issue 17288 reported on Win2k) in a reproducible way results in
data-loss crashes during quite normal operation should of course not
be released.
Comment 20 klas 2003-08-05 12:56:41 UTC
PS.
Sorry should be: (e.g. issue 17228 reported on Win2k)
DS.
Comment 21 mdhooge 2003-08-06 10:48:05 UTC
Some additional information I collected on my Win98SE, with both
1.1beta1 and 1.1RC2.

You start with a new text document and fill it with dummy text (DT<F3>
on english version, then copy/paste several times). Then you select
Online Layout and minimize it.

On my old Celeron 466, 256MB, depending on the size of the document I
got the following time when I minimize then re-open:
1540 characters: 6s
3080 char: 11s
6160 char: 31s

This is the time after some trying, my first one (before the first
kill of OOo) was 6s for 37000 chars.

Comment 22 dankegel 2003-08-13 18:15:30 UTC
I'm adding the 'crash' keyword, upping the priority to P2, and
changing the target to OOo 1.1.1. I'm just a QA volunteer,
though, so the developers may decide I was mistaken, and change
some or all of those fields back -- especially since the
issue is already in 'STARTED' state.
Comment 23 crbell 2003-08-14 20:15:06 UTC
Just tried 1.1RC3 and this problem is still with us. Just opening the
Writer's Guide, going into on-line layout view, and minimizing the
writer window seems to be all it takes to get the app to lock up and
run away with memory.

Can confirm with RC3 on OS X with writer_guide.

Backtrace is the same up to frame #43 in a couple samples. After #43 it starts to be
different.

So what makes:

SfxTopWindow_Impl::Resize()

so special that it thinks it can loop forever? :)
Comment 27 crbell 2003-09-09 02:11:48 UTC
Ok. Who's the wiseguy! Somebody fixed this bug in 1.1rc4!

Fess up! Who did it?

Now what am I gonna do with my life???

Really, this rocks! If anybody else wants to confirm this is fixed,
that would be a good thing! I just checked it under Slackware Linux.

This is very much appreciated!

Cheers -

Win98
Yes, the problem I had up to 1.1RC3 has disappeared with RC4.

I voted for this issue yesterday, and it is already fixed.
Incredible ;-)
Comment 29 dankegel 2003-09-09 16:54:00 UTC
Since two people report that rc4 fixes this, I'm resolving this
as "fixed", hopefully the developers won't mind.

SBA->Marco Menardi: If the problem with your file still exists in OOo
1.1, please open a new issue. It shall be disregarded within this one
that seems to have "only" the same symptom (a loop). In case it turns
out to be the same problem (wich I strongly doubt in this case), the
developer will find out.

SBA->Dan, All: Please stop putting backtraces and the like into the
comments. Always attach them in order to keep issues readable.

Thanks for your comprehension.

AW->SBA: So this bug does no longer occurr at all? Can It then be closed?
Comment 33 fa 2004-02-06 04:46:19 UTC
I cannot reproduce with Writer Guide on OS X using 1.1.1a, OS X 10.3, adn Apple's X11. Closing as
fixed.
